Many people are under the mistaken impression that Estate Planning (Wills, Trusts, etc.) is not necessary or even desirable for young families with children, but rather is mostly for older folks and families with tons of assets and large bank accounts. This could not be further from the truth. Planning is right for you and your family.
Do you KNOW what would happen to your children if a tragedy were to befall you, and you didn't make it home from your social event this weekend? Would they be taken care of by the people you want, know, love and trust, or by someone a judge determines is appropriate? Would your financial assets (retirement accounts, life insurance, etc.) be protected from court appointed guardians who charge by the hour to "protect" your child's interests until they turn 18? Would your minor child be handed a large check upon turning 18, only to find themselves unable to smartly and responsibly handle a cash windfall, able to spend it all at their whim, rather than to judiciously protect it and preserve it for years to come?
If a family has limited assets, maybe even especially if a family's wealth is on the smallish end of the scale, then fast, easy access to these assets after the death of a parent can be incredibly important. Without proper planning and execution of this plan ahead of time, such a family might be left to fight for access to money or property that is necessary for basic needs. Often these struggles are even more pronounced when the parent had children from a prior marriage.
I have children myself, ranging from age 13 to age 27. I know and understand the concerns that parents have for their children and their future, and that spouses have for their surviving spouse. Careful planning can alleviate fear and concern.
I can help you discover how and why estate planning is not just prudent, but an absolute necessity, and why it should be a priority for you.
Upfront costs of planning for your wealth and legacy transfer are not insignificant. But I believe one must consider the costs of not planning, when evaluating the expense of my advice, counsel and services. Once you understand the costs to your family if planning is not done, or if it is done wrong, or done "on the cheap" (including web-based, one-size-fits-all document generating services), you will very likely agree that investing now will pay untold dividends in the future. So again, you ask, is planning with me expensive? My own dad (also an attorney) always told me... You get what you pay for. I provide a very special level of service to my clients. After you have the chance to experience my process yourself, I believe you will agree that the answer really is yes... and no.
